My cat is having trouble walking and has matted hair. He is 16years old. Any ideas what can be wrong

At one point he couldn't walk at all and took him to the vet. They said possibly threw a clot of hypothyroidism. Any one else experiencing the same problems with their older cats?

You have some of your medical information mixed up. Trouble walking can result from throwing a blood clot causing lack of oxygen to muscles. HYPERthryroidism is a common affliction of older cats resulting from an excess secretion of thryoid hormone because of a tumor on those glands.

A poor coat can be a sign of hyperthroidism and it usually accompanied by increased consumption of water and an insatiable appetite. That can be treated with medication, surgery or radiation if it is your cat's condition. Your vet needs to do a blood panel analysis of your cat for that and also for kidney function. If the kidney function is compromised a cat can lose use of its back limbs and cause overall health issues such as a coat that mats excessively.

So I would recommend you go back to the vet and have the blood analysis done to find out if your cat has a treatable condition.

Get your cat groomed at the vet %26amp; have them do a cbc (complete blood count).Your cat has earned the right to be groomed %26amp; have medical care.It has been a loving friend %26amp; family member for 16 years.

I'M SO SORRY. BUT YOUR CAT IS SUFFERING FROM OLD AGE %26amp; THERE IS NO CURE. DO A KIND ACT FOR HIM %26amp; HAVE HIM PUT TO SLEEP.

Hmm, my cat is just as old, but she is having no problems. My nana had a cat like this. your kitty is just getting old, and probably has something wrong in his joints, and therefore he cannot reach himself to clean is coat properly because he is sore. Sounds to me like he is just getting old. Make him comfy and let him live out his life, unless you think he is in pain, then take him in to put him down. People don't like to think of that with their pets, but it is selfish of us to keep them around if they are suffering. good luck to you with greatest sympathy

Seeing as hes that age he's suffering from old age , you should have him groomed as well, and make sure that his shots are up to date, and also i would take him to the vet to check him out, there may be nothing else you can do for him , but take good care of him for as long as you can, you might have to wide up putting him to sleep though.

You should be in such good shape when YOU are 112!

I'm sorry but I think it's just old age... Have him groomed, other than that there's really nothing you can do...

yep my cat is 17 and the matted hair is just with age. they get kind of lazy and dont bother to clean themselves as much. its going to be your job now to brush him daily to get rid of some of the matted hair and keep it from getting worse. the brushes with lots of little hard bristels work welll (almost like flee combs) and to brush his hair the opposite way helps too. although they dont like it too much!

good luck and i hope your cat gets better!'

He is getting old. I dread the times when my pet's get old and die. If he dies, you should think about getting a new pet. Some people might say, "DON'T get a new pet!!! It will never replace the spot in you heart for you cat". There right about that it will never replace the spot in your heart, but that doesn't mean that you can't enjoy another pet. I'm so sorry. I hope he does not die.

In response to your 1st question about your kitty having problems walking, many animals, like humans, have problems with arthritis.

They seem stiff when they walk especially after laying still for awhile and maybe not able to jump onto furniture like they used too. They have glucosamine tablets or liquid that can be given to the kitty or hidden in their food. I've tried this before and it takes a bit of time for it to work (7-10 days) but my kitty was like a kitten again after this.

As cats age they may not be able to reach certain areas to groom themselves or just may lose interest in keeping themselves well-groomed, if this happens they frequently get matted fur around hard to reach areas like the base of the tail and haunches. Its up to you to help your kitty keep groomed, you may have to increase the times you brush them. If the cat is not used to going out of the house on trips a trip to the groomer may be too stressful on them, why not take this time to have a bit of special one on one time with them.

If your cat all of a sudden starts to limp or favour one of their legs and you know that they haven't been rough-housing, you need to get them to the vet as they may have a condition called

FATE (feline aortic thromboembolism) a big word for the kitty having thrown a clot that may have lodged in one of their legs.

Many times the clot lodges in or around the heart and can/will be fatal but if the cat has used up one of their lives and had the clot lodge in one of their legs, the vet may try to dissolve the clot in the hope of restoring use in that leg.

Good Luck!!

16years of age is a very good age for a cat to live to. Sometimes when cats get a bit unwell one thing that stands out is their appearance. They dont clean themselves as often as they normally do. As far as the difficulty in walking is concerned is it possible he has developed arthitis? probably with being an older cat. I have heard that cats can live to their twenties. Just keep an eye on him and dont let him out.Maybe better to keep him in and let him use a litter tray. Just keep monitoring him and keep in contact with the vet. i hope he gets better.
