Ohman...I've had the SAME problem! I let my hair grow longer (mid shoulder), but I'm not sure what short means to you!
Anyways...straightening and wearing it down always looks nice, but make sure you put some sort of protective product on your hair before you use the flat iron. Straightening it removes the bulky feel of thick hair, and also makes it shinier (with a product)! Then you can just wear it down, or use clips to keep it out of your face.
Another thing you might want to consider is getting your hair thinned out, as was mentioned above. Thinning it out makes it a lot cooler to year your hair down it the summer, and keeps the frizz at bay.

why don't you let it grow thick hair is always nicer longer....and while it's growing try experimenting by putting some up some down using clips etc. one style i know is taking the front bits brushing them over the top of your heard and then putting a clip to hold it in place
