depends on how short/long it is. try washing it the night before and staying out of warm/humid weather to weigh it down (if your going for waves instead of curls)/or on the other hand wash it right before you go out (as your getting ready) to poof it up (which is what i doubt your going for). Just experiment. try checking out different websites and see what you can come up with on your own.

A straightener, curling iron, brushes and hair products are great to have on hand.
